American Gizzard Shad are a freshwater herring occuring throughout the United States from New Mexico to New York and farther. The gizzard shad lives an average of four to six years. A typical gizzard shad is eight to 12 inches in length with a maximum length of 20 inches and a maximum weight of four pounds.

A dark spot is present on each side of the body near the gill cover. The last ray in the dorsal fin is very long and thin. The American gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), also known as the mud shad, is a member of the herring family of fish, and is native to large swaths of fresh and brackish waters of the United States of America.

The adult has a deep body, with a silvery-green coloration above fading to plain silver below. The gizzard shad commonly resides in freshwater lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and streams Family: Clupeidae. Gizzard shad were first observed in Connecticut during the late s, apparently the result of a natural range expansion, probably from Hudson River stock.

The species became well established in all of our larger coastal rivers during the s, and populations may still be increasing. To quantify this potential, we evaluated responses of age-0 gizzard shad, crustacean zooplankton, and phytoplankton to the addition of hybrid striped bass Morone saxatilis x M.

Identification: Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum is characterized by the blunt snout, small toothless mouth, a long trailing last dorsal ray, and closely packed gill rakers which can be present in numbers beyond Eyes have “eyelids” composed of fat-storing adipose tissue.

Responses of gizzard shad book gill membranes are free from the throat. The body is short and deep and ranges from moderately to strongly. Any shad longer than 7 inches is almost certainly a gizzard shad.

Gizzard shad receive their name from their muscular gizzard-like stomach, which it uses to digest its adult diet of phytoplankton. Shad For Catfish Bait: The Essential Guide Threadfin Shad and Gizzard Shad are very different fish.

Threadfin shad are less hearty than gizzard shad, they cannot tolerate cold as well and they don’t grow to the sizes that gizzard shad do. Gizzard shad grow to larger sizes, they are more hearty than threadfin shad and therefore have a wider distribution. Gizzard shad diets were evaluated using stable isotopes of sulfur and gut content analysis.

Gizzard shad δ34S values confirmed the ontogenetic changes in the diet composition reported in literature. During the summer ofgizzard shad δ34S signatures showed clear evidence of an ontogenetic shift from water column to benthic food items.

We evaluated responses by gizzard shad to the range of biomasses present among the three lakes and 5 years of the study. Annual growth increments varied little over 5 years and were not related to population density across the three lakes.

Length-at-maturity differed among lakes and years, but was not related to population density. Effects of a Selectively Reduced Gizzard Shad Population on Trophic Interactions and Age-0 Fishes in Walker County, Lake, Alabama. North American Journal of Fisheries Management Irwin, B.J., D.R.

Decries and G.W. Kim. Responses to Gizzard Shad Recovery following Selective Treatment in Walker County Lake, Alabama, Gizzard shad were illegally introduced to Claytor Lake in the late s and soon established a thriving population. This study assessed 1) the degree to which gizzard shad were utilized by piscivores (pelagic - striped bass Morone saxatilis, hybrid striped bass M.

chrysops x M. saxatilis, and walleye Stizostedion vitreum, and three littoral black basses Micropterus spp.), 2) the availability.

Shad Spawn on Lake Texoma. Threadfin Shad and Gizzard Shad spawn in very shallow water over sand, gravel, wood, vegetation, and even mud. The large gizzard shad prefer to spawn in as cold as 57 degrees or as warm as 75 degrees. On Lake Texoma, this means prime time is April.

gizzard shad, and the possibility of gizzard shad competing with early life stages of sport fishes for prey items. It has long been known that gizzard shad shift with age from obligate feeding on zooplankton once attaining a size of mm in length to a more omnivorous diet of detritus.

Gizzard shad reproduction eventually will decrease in response to over-crowding, resulting in little forage for the average size bass in the population. To avoid this situation, it is usually necessary to remove a portion of the gizzard shad population every 3 to 5 years with rotenone. Maintaining a healthy, reproducing population is the key to.

Plasma corticosteroid concentrations were measured in 14 species of fish immediately after they were electrofished from reservoirs on the Alabama River and after they had been transported for 2 h. There was no corticosteroid response in spotted gars Lepisosteus oculatus.

Bowfins Amia calva, longnose gars Lepisosteus osseus, and freshwater drums Aplodinotus grunniens had only small. Gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum is an important prey fish that is capable of influencing both the upper and lower trophic levels in aquatic systems. Contrary to our predictions, during the 4 years after a selective reduction of gizzard shad in Walker County State Fishing Lake (WCL), Alabama, the sport fish population structure did not decline as gizzard shad abundance rebounded.

Species: Gizzard shadScientific name: Dorosoma cepedianumNicknames: hickory shad, herring, skipjackClaim to fame: Although the gizzard shad’s tasteless flesh has no “skillet appeal” for anglers and the fish are seldom caught, this fish plays an important role in Missouri fishing.

In preliminary experiments, we determined the initial point of loss of equilibrium (LOE) for threadfin shad to be °C and for gizzard shad to be less than °C.
